Grumman F6F Hellcat

Successor to the Grumman Wildcat, the F6F Hellcat made history in 1942 when it decisively whipped the Japanese carrier based fighters opposing it in the Pacific during World War 2. First Flown on July 26th of that year, the Hellcat was the result of specifications laid down by a large group of fighter pilots polled by the officials of the Grumman Aircraft Company. In addition to its duty as a carrier-based fighter, the Hellcat served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a potent fighter-bomber. Wing Span: 16½" Scale: 1/32 Min. Age: 10.

Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat

The first production F6F-3 took to the air in Oct. 1942, and by Jan. 16, 1943, operational F6F-3’s were being delivered to the U.S. Navy. More than 2500 joined the naval service in 1944 with production of the “3’s” coming to a halt in the spring of 1944 when an improved version, the F6F-5 began to roll down the assembly lines. Form its first combat engagement, the Hellcat proved superior to its Japanese opponent and maintained this advantage right up to the end of the hostilities. Largely remembered for its exploits during the war in the Pacific, Hellcats served aboard the following as well as other carriers of the U.S. Pacific Fleet- Yorktown, Essex, Enterprise, Hornet, Lexington, Ticonderoga and Intrepid. Grumman TBF Avenger

The Grumman TBF initial production order for 286 planes was placed in the latter part of 1940 and, between 1942 and the end of the 1943, 2, 293 Avenger were built and delivered to the U.S. Navy. It became the Navy standard torpedo-bomber of World War 2 and first saw action on June 4, 1942, at the historic Battle of midway. Hawker Mk-1 Hurricane

During the famous Battle of Britain, more than three-fifths of the R.A.F. Fighter Command's squadrons used Hawker Hurricanes. This immortal partner of the Supermarine Spitfire destroyed the German bombers while the Spitfires engaged the Messerschmitt BF-109's. The Hurricane was the first combat aircraft capable of exceeding 300 M.P.H., and it became the most versatile single-seat warplane to emerge from World War 2. This plane was used in the Western Desert conflict as a fighter-bomber and a modified version, called the Sea Hurricane, became the first single-seat fighter to serve with the Fleet Air Arm. The Typhoon IB, known as the “Tiffy”, distinguished itself in the Battle of Normandy destroying 137 tanks and opening the way for the liberation of France and Belgium. Nos. 56 and 609 squadrons based at Duxford received their first Typhoons in 1941. In 1942 No. 609 squadron moved to Manston in surpassed Spitfires at intercepting Fw 190s. Typhoons destroyed the first two Me 210s over the British Isles. Maximum speed of 417 MPH at 20,000 feet was obtained in 7.6 minutes. Its true element was with eight 3” rockets and four 20mm cannon. Junkers JU-87B Stuka

Early in World War 2, the world was stunned by the effective dive bombing tactics of the JU 87 Stuka. First tested in the Spanish Civil War, it went through considerable design changes before emerging as the formidable bomber of the early 40’s. For two years, this plane was one of the most successful weapons of the Luftwaffe and was used to spearhead the German drives into enemy territory. The JU 87 saw much service on the Russian front as an anti-tank weapon and was also used in the African desert on the Malta raids and in the Italian campaigns. Although considered obsolete within two years after the beginning of the WW-2, the JU 87 went on to see action until the end of the war and enjoyed the distinction of being, besides the American Douglas Dauntless, the only mass-produced dive bomber of WW-2.
