Known as the "ultimate interceptor," the F-106 Delta Dart remains the most advanced U.S. Air Force fighter designed specifically as an interceptor. Deployed in fighter interceptor squadrons to protect the United States from attack by Soviet bombers, the F-106 used a Hughes fire control system to locate its targets in any weather, day or night. The Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system linked the interceptor with ground radar and control systems to direct it to its target. It was armed with infrared and radar-guided Falcon missiles as well as an unguided Genie rocket which carried a nuclear warhead. Later Delta Darts could be armed with a six-barrel 20-mm cannon.

Douglas A-26 A/B Invader

The Douglas A-26 entered the Second World War at a relatively late date: the first eighteen examples were, in fact, sent to the European front in the summer of 1944. However, shortly afterwards, the Invader demonstrated its worth, and on the cease fire the troops equipped with these planes had flown more than 11,000 missions. Also in the Pacific, in only a few months, the Invader consolidated its fame as the crew’s favourite bomber. After a short period of time, the A-26 found itself fighting again in Vietnam. It then became the average standard bomber of the USAF used in the War in Korea. It was in this conflict that the A-26C variant was more widely used; characterised by P&W R-2800-27 engines and a glass nose, which contained the Norden bombsight. Many examples were successively supplied to smaller air forces, which kept them in service until the middle of the 70’s.

The Aerial Screw designed by Leonardo da Vinci was a precursor of the modern day helicopter. The device was designed to compress air in order to obtain flight. The device uses a screw-shaped sail to drill in the air just as a screw drills into other materials. It consisted of a platform mounted by a helical screw driven by a rudimentary system similar to rubber band-powered model airplanes.
